In the last few months we have seen a significant increase in requests for certified fire doors for period buildings and mansion blocks – traditional timber fire doors that are able to meet the latest fire regulations without compromising on period design.
In the wake of the tragedy of Grenfell, property owners and managers are waking up to the importance of ensuring fire doors are brought up to the required safety standard, which are a legal requirement for flats which open onto communal areas shared with other tenants.
Period properties can be more vulnerable to fire, as they are often several storeys high and feature interior doors that are made of old, dry timber and lack the modern fire-proofing that’s needed to ensure a property’s inhabitants and their belongings are adequately protected.
By compartmentalising fire, certified fire doors which are adequately installed and maintained restrict the spread of fire and give residents valuable time to escape, as well as creating a protected route for emergency services. You can tell if a door is a certified fire door as it will have a label or plug along the top or side edge of the door.
At Timbawood we are supporting Fire Door Safety Week this week, which aims to raise awareness of the crucial role that fire doors play in passive fire protection, and raise awareness of adequate specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors.
Our fire doors are tested and independently certified under the British Standard for fire resistance, BS 476: Part 22: 1987 to resist fire for 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the specification required. Site specific assessments are also available for designs outside of the assessed parameters.
To meet British Standards for fire resistance, we use fireproof, ‘intumescent’ boards and seals within the timber panels, underneath hinges, latches and locks, and around the perimeter of the door (on the frame and/or the door) where necessary.
As specialists in period, conservation and listed properties, we offer a full range of door designs, panel styles, moulded sections and glazing options, and can custom-make timber doors to match the style of any period, all handmade in our West London factory. Whether you’re looking for single or double doors, panelled or glazed, interior or front doors, we can create elegant, contemporary designs or classic traditional doors to match any architectural period.
As well as enhanced fire protection, homeowners can benefit from improved insulation, reducing cold, noise and dust – as well as enhanced security, for a more comfortable living environment.
